How the LNRS progressed

Conference

The Government’s information on local nature recovery strategies and local nature recovery strategy statutory guidance was used to guide how the LNRS for Derbyshire was developed.

A conference was held at County Hall in Matlock on 29 January 2024, to mark the start of the LNRS development process.  Around 120 delegates representing a wide range of organisations and sectors came together to discuss what the strategy needs to address and how we work together to achieve it.

Draft Strategy

Following the conference, and throughout 2024 and early 2025, work was undertaken to develop the content of the draft LNRS and the accompanying draft interactive mapping. This work included:

  • Review of available environmental and biodiversity information and data, as well as existing policies and strategies, to develop the LNRS baseline and initial proposals for the strategy
  • Input, support and review from the project’s core governance groups: the Supporting Authorities Group, the Steering Group, the Advisory Board, a series of Task and Finish Groups, as well as our neighbouring responsible authorities.
  • Focussed stakeholder engagement throughout April – July 2024 to help shape the emerging strategy, followed by wider engagement during September – November 2024.  This was delivered through a series of online and in-person events, online surveys and wider conversations.
  • Pulling together technical information, knowledge and expertise from  a wide range of partners and sources.

You can learn more about the LNRS development process in Sections 1 and 2 of the Strategy, and in the associated appendices on our Resources page.

The draft strategy was reviewed by the Supporting Authorities Group, the Steering Group, the Advisory Board in early 2025, and approved for public consultation during February and March 2025.

Public Consultation and Engagement

We were pleased to invite public feedback on the draft Local Nature Recovery Strategy during a consultation period running from Friday 14 February to Thursday 20 March 2025.

We received over 680 responses to our public consultation survey, numerous emails and comments on the draft interactive mapping, whilst over 200 people engaged with us directly at our ‘S.H.E.D.’ public engagement events around the county. The resulting University of Derby reports can be viewed via links below. Thank you to everyone that took the time to share their views on the draft strategy!

We reviewed every comment received, and wherever possible, used these to inform, develop and refine the strategy and produce the final version of the LNRS.
