How the Derbyshire LNRS began

Governance

Derbyshire County Council were allocated by government as the Responsible Authority for developing and delivering the Local Nature Recovery Strategy for Derbyshire, including the City of Derby.

To help support, govern and direct the development of the LNRS, guidance from the Department for Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) was followed, including the application of a robust governance process.

Three governance groups were established:

  1.   A Supporting Authorities Group – enabling the involvement of the supporting authorities in the preparation of the LNRS, including making proposals to the Steering Group.
  2.   A Steering Group – provided technical expertise and oversight to the development of the LNRS and promoted and helped to facilitate effective organisational and sector stakeholder involvement in its development. Made proposals to the Advisory Board.
  3.   An Advisory Board – responsible for reviewing and validating information referred to it by the Steering Group and making recommendations to Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet in respect to fulfilling its Responsible Authority duties.

Natural Capital Strategy

Natural capital is the term used to describe the world’s stock of natural resources. Our natural resources provide us with a huge variety of benefits, goods and services – known as ecosystem services – which are vital to life on earth, and which support our health and wellbeing as well as being vital for our economy.

In 2021, we undertook a major study into the ‘natural capital’ of Derbyshire, so that we could understand the real value of the environment to the people of Derbyshire. This study forms the foundation on which the LNRS was developed.
